新车出厂时，发动机部件表面有很多毛刺，是凹凸不平的，需要通过一定时间的磨合才能把新零件表面磨平，从而使各部件之间形成严密良好的配合关系，这就是所谓的“磨合期”。这种硬性磨合一开始就会使部件遭到破坏，切削下来的金属碎屑会加剧部件磨损，造成发动机早期磨损。
